ここカナダでは、生徒たちには2ヶ月の夏休みがあります。
宿題はありません。
小学生は自分の周りの世界を探検します、特に自然のいっぱいある公園や大平原とか、自分ちの裏庭、そしでて住宅街の裏通りで。私も小学生の頃は、大平原の小さな町の裏庭でオモチャの車を使って遊んだものです。そこで見つけた、地中にある巣に出たり入ったりする急ぎ足のアリに魅惑されてしまいました。動きがギクシャクしている黒い大きなアリと、時々人間を噛むことのある小さな赤いアリなどに。
子供たちは、夏には友達と集まって遊びます。ふと遊びを思いつき、ルールは自分たちで勝手に決め、そのルールを使って揉め事を解決して行きます。こんな昔ながらのあそびに、digital deviceが割り込んで来ましたが、親たちは子供たちがDeviceを使うScreen timeをどんどん厳しく制限するようになりました。その成果があり、子供たちはまた自然の中を探検して遊ぶようになりました。私が小さな頃遊んだように。
中学生くらいになると、夏にはアルバイトをします。私も2回の夏を農場で働いて過ごしたり、家族のビジネス（小さなスポーツショップ）を手伝ったりしました。このアルバイト経験は、大人の世界に飛び出して行くための大きな準備となりました。学校より役にたったかも。
農場では、13歳の時にトラックの運転を習い、小麦畑を走り回りました。つい農場の側溝にトラックを乗り入れても、どうやったらトラックをそこに埋まらないようにするかも習いました。これは農場を運転するのにとても大切なことなんです。
家族のビジネスである小さなスポーツショップでは、色んな人と話す方法を学びました。文句を言うお客さんをうまくかわすのは楽しかったです。コツは、文句を言う人の話を聞いてあげること。そうしたら、一体何に怒っていて、何をしてあげればいいのかがわかります。
私はこの仕事を11歳の時に始めましたので、背が低すぎてレジに届きませんでした。コカ・コーラの木箱を持って来て、その上に立っていました。万引き犯を見つけた時のことは決して忘れることが出来ません。痩せっぽちで私より2歳年下の犯人。その子の父親は、謝るどころかカンカンに怒り、警察を呼んで自分の子に万引きの罰を与えるよう言い張りました。
このような経験が教えてくれたこと。私は人とコミュニケーションすることが、まぁ得意です。大きなトラックを運転することはそれほど上手じゃないけど。11歳の頃から客と接した経験は、自分が将来どんな仕事に就きたいか、就きたくないかを明らかに教えてくれました。「こんな仕事を一生するのは嫌だな。」という経験をしておくことは非常に重要なことでした。
このようなアルバイト経験を通じて、自分の事がよく理解出来るようになりました。そしてどんな仕事が好きなのかも発見出来ました。
「日本の生徒に英語を教えること」です！
カナダの夏休みと言っても完璧であるとは限りません。学校の先生たちは、生徒が秋になって戻って来た時には前に習っていたことを忘れてしまっていると文句を言います。たった1,2週間の復習をすればいいだけなんですけどね。カナダの教育関係者の中には、夏休みはもっと短くしようと提唱する人たちもいます。しかし、親たちは、自分の子供たちが貴重な経験が出来る夏を少しでも奪ってしまうことには気乗りしていません。自分たちも子供時代の夏にたくさんのことを学び、それがいかに大切かをよく知っているからです。
親も教師も満足出来るような中庸ってありますかね。
27年間日本に住み、日本の生徒の夏を見てきた私には、日本の「どっさり宿題スタイル夏休み」はカナダに輸入したくありません。日本の子供たちは本当に貴重な経験が出来るチャンスを逃してしまっています。特に、自分が何が得意で何をするのが楽しいかを知るチャンス。そんなことも知らずにどうしたら自分が満足出来る仕事など選べるのでしょうね。無理です。
そんなつまらない夏休みより、子供たちがこれまで学んで来たことを、もっと楽しく創造力いっぱいの方法で実際に使ってみるという経験はどうでしょう。そうすれば、夏を使い、子供たちの持つ自然な好奇心に入り込むことが出来るかも。もっともっと学びたいという動機づけにもなるかも。
自分たちが楽しいと思うトピックに集中する自由がいっぱいあるサイエンスプロジェクトなどもいいですね。または、楽しみで仕方ない読書経験とか。応用数学プログラムもいいかも。
カナダクラブからはそんなオンラインプログラムを提供しています。パートナーのMachiko Osawaは英語のShort StoryのReading Program（小学5年生から高校生向け）を開発し、オンラインで楽しそうに教えています。私は専門の数学を使いFermi Estimateという高校生向けのプログラムをデザインしました。そこでは高校生が応用科学、応用数学を使い問題解決法を想像し楽しんでいます。時には今まで解けたことのない問題にも挑戦するんですよ。
そして、来年、日本の生徒がカナダの夏を経験出来るStorytelling Campを復活させようと思っています。カナダの自然を探検し、「お話の作り方」を学びます。ストーリーとは、我々人類が何世紀にも何世代にも渡り受け継いで来た人類の基本的スキルですからね。そのスキルと出会うカナダの夏。興味ありますよね。
私の子供の頃の完璧な夏休みとは、自然の中で遊び回ることでした。大人になってからの完璧な夏休みは、生徒たちの好奇心から火花を散らし、より良い学び手に育て、そして創造力をいぱい持った思考が出来るように手伝うことです。もちろん、面白いプログラムをいっぱい用意して。

Here in Canada, school students have a two-month summer vacation. With no homework.
Elementary school children explore the world around them, particularly the nature of parks, backyards and even back alleys. I used to play with toy cars in a rural backyard and developed a fascination with ants scurrying in and out of their underground nests. There were big black ones with jerky movements and small red ones that would bite you from time to time.
Kids here also join up with friends in summer for unstructured play where they decide the terms of the games and settle their own disputes. Digital devices have cut into these activities, but more and more parents are putting limits on their children’s screen time, and I see kids out exploring nature and playing again like I used to do.
Some older kids, junior high and high school age, get part-time jobs in summer. I worked two summers on a farm, and often at the family business, a small town sports shop. These experiences prepared me for the world far more than school did.
At the farm, I learned how to drive a truck in the wheat fields at the age of 13. Importantly, I learned how to get the truck unstuck when I accidentally drove it into a ditch.
At the family business, I learned how to speak with people. I came to enjoy fielding customer complaints. I found that it’s all about listening. You find out what the customer is angry about and see what you can do for them. I started at 11 years old and was too short to reach the cash register. I had to stand on a coca-cola crate. And I’ll never forget the time I caught a shoplifter, a skinny kid two years younger than me. His father was furious and insisted we call the police to “teach him a lesson.”
These experiences taught me what I was kinda good at (communicating with people) and not so good at (driving a big truck). This helped show me what kind of jobs I could do and enjoyed, and importantly, what I didn’t want to do.
Learning about myself helped me find a job I love: teaching English to Japanese students.
Summer vacation in Canada isn’t perfect though. Teachers here complain that students returning to school in fall forget the previous year’s learning, which requires a week or two of review. Some educators are calling for a shorter vacation period. However, parents here are reluctant to take from their kids the experiences that they themselves had.
Is there a happy medium?
Having lived in Japan for 27 years, I wouldn’t recommend the Japanese summer vacation homework style for Canada. Poor Japanese kids look so swamped with homework. I feel they are losing out on precious experiences. Particularly in finding out what they are good at and enjoy. How can you choose a satisfying job without knowing these things?
Instead, what if we had kids use what they’ve already learned in a fun and creative way. Then we could use summer to tap into the natural curiosity of children and increase their motivation to learn. A science project where they have freedom to focus on a topic they enjoy, for instance. Or a fun reading experience. Maybe an applied math program.
We offer such programs online at Canada Club. My partner Machiko Osawa has developed a fun English short-story reading program accessible to students from about grade 5 through junior high. I have a program on the Fermi Estimate where high school students use applied science and math to imagine solutions to fun, sometimes unsolvable problems.
And next year, we hope to resume our summer storytelling camp for Japanese students to join us in Canada, explore nature, and learn all about storytelling, a fundamental learning skill that humans have passed down for generations.
The perfect summer vacation for my childhood was playing around in nature. As an adult, my perfect summer vacation is to spark students’ curiosity and help them become better learners and creative thinkers through fun programs.
