Teacher’s Gotta Learn：先生の役割とは自分も学び続けること
教育者としての大切な役割は、自分自身も学び続けること。学び続けることで、生徒たちに「不思議の世界があるんだよ」と思わせることが出来ます。それが生徒たちの好奇心を発火させ、燃え盛る好奇心から「学び」を創造することが出来るわけです。
40年近く日本の生徒を指導している私にとって、それこそが「教えること」の醍醐味なんですよ。自分も学び続け、生徒と好奇心を共有すること。
最近、そんな絶好のチャンスがありました。
生徒のひとりが授業を欠席したんです。親知らずを抜いたからだそうで、偶然なことに私は親知らずについての記事をちょうど読んだところだったんです。文化人類学者によると、人類の顎はどんどん小さくなって来ているとか、つまり、小さくなった顎には親知らずの居場所がなくなってしまったんです。ひとつの理由は、日常食べているものの変化です。人類の遠い祖先たちは木の実や種のような硬いものを食べていました、そして栄養豊かな骨髄までしゃぶれるように骨をガリガリかじっていました。
親知らずを抜いた生徒が授業に戻って来た時、ワクワクしながらその話をしました。生徒も私も、私たちがそんなにも長い進化の歴史を持つ生き物であることに魅惑されてしまいました。しかも、私たち人類は今も進化を続けているのです。
「学ぶこと」は「楽しい」です。
私が習った中の最高の先生たちは、生徒たちが自分自身の学びが出来るよう好奇心に火をつけ、励ましてくれる人たちです。もし先生たちが学ぶことに意欲を持ち、興味をいだいているのなら、その先生たちの思いは生徒たちにもどんどん感染して行きます。
今日、科学とテクノロジーは猛烈な速さで進歩しています。教師は、生徒たちに正確で一番新しい情報を提供するために、その速さに追いつく必要があります。ちょうど医者が新しい治療法やその行程についていく必要があるのと同じです。
特に、AIの累乗の進化。私たちにはいつ、どの仕事が時代遅れなものになるのかもわかりません。みんな学び続けることや学び直しが必要になります。そうでないと自分の専門分野の仕事に留まることが出来なくなります。
それは今、すでに私たちの周りで起こっていますね。これらの急速な変化について行くためには、教師は生徒の中に「不思議なことに対する畏敬の念」を育み、生徒たちが自分自身で「学べる」よう助けて行かなければなりません。そして、それをするためのベストな方法は、教師自身が学び続けることです。

An important role for an educator is to continue learning. By doing so, we can instill in our students a sense of wonder, which helps to ignite their curiosity and create learners out of them. I find that the most satisfying part of teaching.
I recently had that chance. A student of mine missed a class because of a wisdom tooth extraction, and I had just read an article about that. According to anthropologists, human jaws have become smaller, too small to accommodate wisdom teeth. One reason for this is a change in diet. Our distant ancestors ate harder foods such as nuts and seeds and gnawed at bones to get at nutrient-rich marrow. We generally don’t have our children do that today.
When my student returned to class, I excitedly shared the story. Both of us found it fascinating that we are the product of a long line of evolution. And that we continue to evolve.
Learning is fun, and the best teachers I have known were those who could spark curiosity and encourage students to learn on their own. If the teacher is motivated and interested in learning, that interest becomes infectious.
Today, science and technology are advancing at a blistering pace. Teachers need to keep up in order to provide students with accurate, up-to-date information. Just like a doctor needs to keep up with new medical treatments and a blistering pace.
Particularly with advances in AI, we don’t know when our jobs may become obsolete. People are going to need to continue learning and re-learning to remain relevant in the workforce. That is already happening today. To keep up with these changes, a teacher needs to foster a sense of wonder in their students and help them embrace self-learning. And the best way to do that is for the teacher to keep learning.
