高校留学生へ《The Freedom to be Responsible:責任のある自由とは》

by Robert McMillan

As summer ends and classes resume, I can picture poor Japanese students nodding off at their desks, trapped in hot uniforms, groggy from late-night last-minute summer vacation homework and exam study. My students tell me that sleeping in class is quite commonplace in Japan. New students to Canada beware: sleeping in class here is taboo.

The new school year begins in September in Canada, and if you have just flown in from Japan feeling the pull of jet lag in class, fight it. If you fall asleep, there could be unintended consequences to your freedom.

At junior high and high school here, participation in class is considered essential. Students listen to lectures, take notes, and engage in discussions. What they learn in class shows up in tests and for assignments. And students are graded for participation in class discussions.

So, if a student falls asleep in class, the teacher wakes them up quite strongly: “Hey! Wake up!” If they fall asleep again, they are sent to the principal’s office. Principals here treat high school students as young adults and will ask them questions to help them solve their own problem: why they fell asleep; how much they slept the night before; what time they went to bed; if they are eating properly and getting enough exercise; and what they can do to stop sleeping.

If a student continues to fall asleep in class, the school calls the parents, guardians or host family to work out a solution. This could mean you have to start eating breakfast if you haven’t been. Or a bedtime curfew. In the West, it is believed that teenagers require 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night for proper health and brain development. If you get up at 7:00 am for school, your host family may demand that you be in your room with lights out at say, 10:00 pm on school nights. If you refuse and continue sleeping in class, you will likely be sent back home.

When you homestay in Canada, be prepared to make changes like this to your usual routine. Here’s another: some Japanese students tell me that they take a nap after school and work late into the night, but that may not be possible in Canada. Bedrooms here are often on the same floor, and if hosts wake up late at night to a clacking keyboard or a conversation with someone in Japan, you may be asked to be in your room early with your lights off. If you refuse, you will be asked to leave the host family. Few if any families would want to take you in after that.

Canadians generally wake up early for work, and keeping them awake at night does not bode well for your freedom.

These are just a few examples of the many differences between our cultures, and I hope your agent has discussed them with you.

As a minor, you don’t have a lot of say in the rules – you have to adapt to your new environment. When you live in a different home and attend a different school in a different country, you need to be flexible and resilient. I have met Japanese students who come to Canada for the perceived freedoms. However, freedom comes with responsibility. If you are not responsible, you quickly lose those freedoms.

That doesn’t mean the homestay can break the rules to their contract, which you should have a copy of from your agent. If, for instance, you are not being fed enough or are constantly being used as a babysitter, then it is time to act.

If that happens, contact us for guidance. We have been helping Japanese students in Canadian homestays for over 30 years.

For Canada Club members, we provide free and unlimited advice, counselling and translation of messages to schools or host families in Canada to help resolve issues and keep Japanese students here happy and healthy.
