Using AI to Write: AI

I now see ads that offer bloggers money if they use generative AI to write their posts. That’s not surprising. Investment in AI has skyrocketed, but the general public has been slow to take it up. AI companies need more customers. If they can get people to rely on AI, those people will become potential customers.
That sounds a bit like a drug dealer handing out free drugs to get people hooked.
AI is not as bad as street drugs, of course. There can be some advantages if you know how to use it. But there are some very real dangers.
The biggest advantage, naturally, is speed. Generative AI can answer our questions instantaneously. That can feel so satisfying, even almighty. And that’s the problem. Because AI is not an intelligent thinker. It is just mathematics. And it makes mistakes.
Generative AI is fed tons of written data and makes a mathematical “map” of similar words and their proximity in a sentence. Then, when you ask it a question, it generates an answer by choosing words of higher probability. The answer may or may not be correct.
Some lawyers here in Canada have found that out the hard way. Their AI queries returned fictional legal cases, and they used them in their arguments at court. Now they are in trouble.
Company workers are struggling too. It sometimes takes more time to fact check AI generated documents than to write the documents on their own.
Lately I have seen Japanese students use AI to write assignments for high school and university here in Canada, and I advise them to tread very, very carefully.
As a test, I asked generative AI to write a simple essay, and it made some vital mistakes. It did not use a hook to catch the reader’s attention; it did not clearly state the reasons; and it did not have any specific examples. All of this is necessary for essays here in Canada.
If students do not already know how to write essays, they could get into trouble using generative AI for homework assignments here in Canada.
I find myself in a good position to offer help here. I have been using my own curriculum to teach essay writing to Japanese students for over 30 years, and I have earned certificates in artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMS) and data science. I know what essays Canadian teachers want and also what goes on when you ask generative AI a question.
Recently, I have designed lessons on how to use generative AI, and I teach this in Canada Club. Once a student learns the essay structure and style in English, I teach them how to use an AI-generated response to create a presentable essay. If students are going to use AI, they need to manage it effectively.
For disclosure, my partner Machiko Osawa and I do not use AI to write our columns. Writing is a slow process that requires thinking – and that is the point. Writing helps develop critical thinking skills.
I fear that students who use generative AI without learning how to write will not develop essential thinking skills. Then what? I can see them becoming overly dependent on AI, unable to think or act without their artificial intelligence devices – a bit like a drug addict.
