AIのエッセイを生徒が検証する授業（サンプル）by Canada Club

「留学生へ：AIを盲目的に信じないこと、クリティカルシンキングでAIの嘘を見抜くこと」のコラムに続いて、実際にカナダクラブでRobertがどんな指導をしているのかを説明します。

Robertが長年の経験を生かし、日本の生徒のためにデザインしたEssay Basics（全40レベル）の最初の９レベルは、expository essays （ここから上のすべてのエッセイ形式の基本）を教えます。プラン作りのサンプルから、実際のエッセイまで、生徒が見本として学べるのはRobertの書き下ろしのプランと実際のエッセイです。生徒はそれに従い、丁寧に英語のエッセイの基本を学んで行きます。

そのexpository essayのレベル９まで達した生徒たちへのAIを使う練習を行います。

９つのレベルをパスした生徒たちは、エッセイに重要なことを深いところまで学び、自分でも苦労しながらエッセイを書き上げていますので、AIに向ける目は相当厳しいはず。その厳しい目を更にクリティカルシンキング思考法でもっとパワフルに、AIの杜撰さといい加減さとを理解するのが目的の特訓です。

このように進めます。

AI for Expository Essays

Let’s learn how to use AI to help write an expository essay.

１．Choose an Essay

Look at your essays from assignments A6, A7 and A9 and choose one of them. Later, we’ll have AI write an essay on the same topic.
（これまで書いたエッセイのA6, A7, A9からひとつ選んで下さい。そしてAIに同じトピックでエッセイを書かせます。）

２．Have AI write the same essay.

Go to ChatGPT, a website with the famous AI “chatbot”. This AI generates text; in other words, it creates messages.
（ChatGPTに入って下さい。有名なAI “chatbot”を持つサイトです。このAIは文章を生成します、言い換えればメッセージを作ります。）

Ask ChatGPT to write an essay about the same topic as your essay above in #1.

３．Content Checking

Gather the Fact
(事実を吟味してみましょう。）

ChatGPT is an example of generative AI. It uses mathematics to put words and sentences together. However, it makes things up. In other words, the output from generative AI may not be true! Let’s check if it is.
（ChatGPTは生成AIの一例です。AIは数学を使い、単語と文章を合わせて行きます。しかしながら、それはありもしないことを書くことが多いです。言い換えると、GenerativeAI（生成AI)が書くものは真実でないかも知れないということです。さぁ、真実を書いているかどうか確かめましょう。）

First, we need to find the facts. Let’s look at an example. Here is the sample essay from assignment #3 (A 6):
（まず、事実を見つけること。この例をみて下さい。これがAIの書いたレベル６のエッセイサンプルです。）

Japan has many frightening insects; for instance, speedy cockroaches, itchy mosquitoes and large bees. Cicadas, however, are the scariest insect. First, they are incredibly noisy. The males scream loudly, in a high pitch, to attract a female. They sound like a child who is falling off a bicycle. It makes me shiver. In addition, cicadas are big. When you see one hugging a tree, it looks as large as a bird. It looks large enough to suck out half of your blood. Last, cicadas are very ugly. They have big eyes and hard shells so that they look like monsters or mini dinosaurs. Before they die, their black, shiny bodies turn as gray as the hair on an old witch. They also have sticky, crooked legs that can grab and hold you very firmly. It is terrifying to have a gray monster hold you so tightly. Although some brave children like to catch cicadas in butterfly nets, be careful. Cicadas are scary insects.

Here the facts from the essay:

４．Check the Facts – “Gut Feeling”
事実チェック）ー「直感を使う」

To check the facts, let’s use our intuition or gut feeling. In other words, does the information sound correct to you?
（事実をチェックするには、まず直感を使います。言い換えると、AIの情報は真実のように思えますか？｝
＊直感とは、これまでの経験や観察、そして学んだことなどから、ある物事が「正しい」と感じるかどうかです。単なる思いつきではありません。クリティカルシンキングの重要なスキルです。

Here’s an example using the facts above from the sample essay (A 6).
（AIが書いたエッセイが実例として使っている事実が下記です。）

Japan has many frightening insects;… speedy cockroaches, itchy mosquitoes and large bees.

This has two facts: （AIは２つのFactを書きました。）

Japan has speedy cockroaches, itchy mosquitoes and large bees.
This sounds correct.　（これはまぁOK)
If you have lived in Japan, you have probably seen them.（日本に住んだことがあれば、これも経験しているでしょうからOK)
These insects are frightening.　（これはAIの主観です。また、これはHookー読者を引きつけるための最初の文なので事実を並べるのは不必要です。エッセイとしては失格です。）

This is subjective (some people may feel frightened, others may not). Also, it is the hook sentence, used to catch the reader’s attention, and is not an important “fact” for the essay theme: cicadas are scary.
It’s not necessary to check this.
… they [cicadas] are incredibly noisy.　（OK)
This sounds right (if you’ve experienced summer in Japan).
The males scream loudly, in a high pitch, to attract a female.
Some of this sounds right.　（部分的にOK)
I have heard cicadas in Japan make a loud, high-pitch voice.
I don’t know if males scream to attract females. I’ll have to check that.（本当かな？）
…it [a cicada] looks as large as a bird.
Is it that large? Let’s fact check this too.（セミはそんなに大きいんですか？チェックしてみます。）
… cicadas are very ugly.　（これはまったくの主観を入れています。大切な理由の文ですので、論理的に書かなければいけません。つまり、本当に”醜い”のかを読者に示す必要があります。）

This is subjective. It is a reason sentence, so the writer needs to prove it to us.
Before they die, their black, shiny bodies turn as gray as the hair on an old witch.

This has two facts:

They have black, shiny bodies.
This sounds right.　（OK)
They turn as gray as hair on an old witch.　（年老いた魔女の髪の毛がどうなるのかをチェックしてみないといけません。）
What does an old witch’s hair look like? Let’s fact check this.
They also have sticky, crooked legs that can grab and hold you very firmly.

This has two facts:
They have sticky, crooked legs
The legs can grab and hold you firmly.
This sounds correct to me.　（OK)
I have seen the legs and had this experience in Japan – as many Japanese children likely have.

Next, use your gut feeling to check the ChatGPT facts (from your list above).
（次に、直感を使い上であげたChatGPTの書いた事実をチェック。）

Be careful here. If you are not sure, then you say you don’t know. If you put false AI information into your essay, you will be in trouble at school (or university)!
（注意が必要。もしAIが書いた嘘の情報をエッセイに入れると学校で（特に大学で）問題になりますからね。）

５．Content Checking with Sources
AIの書いた内容を正しい情報源を使いチェックしましょう。）

Form the Question(s)

Let’s check the facts from the sample essay in A6 that did not pass our intuition:
（レベル６のエッセイで、私たちの直感をパスしなかったものをチェックしましょう。）

The males [cicadas] scream loudly, in a high pitch, to attract a female.
Do male cicadas scream loudly in a high pitch to attract a female?
（オスのせみはメスの気を惹くために高い音で叫びますか？）
…it [a cicada] looks as large as a bird.
Do cicadas look as large as a bird?
（セミは鳥と同じくらい大きいですか？）
Before they die, their black, shiny bodies turn as gray as the hair on an old witch.
Do cicadas “turn as gray as the hair on an old witch”?
（セミは年取った魔女みたいに灰色になりますか？）

Next, paste the facts above that may not be correct, and turn them into questions.
（AIが書いた「事実じゃないかも」情報をここにペーストして、それを質問文にして下さい。

Fact Check with Sources
（信頼出来る情報源に行き、AIは本当のことを言っているか嘘を言っているかをチェック）

Now we need to find good sources to answer our questions. We could ask an authority. For instance, for essay A6 on cicadas in Japan, we could ask a person who has lived in Japan if they have that experience – but only if we trust that person. An entomologist – a person who studies insects – would be a great authority, but this is hard if you don’t know an entomologist.
（さぁ、ここからは信頼できる良い情報源を見つけることが必要になります。その分野の権威（専門家）を持っている人に聞くのも方法です。例えば、日本のセミについてのレベル６のエッセイでは、日本に住んだことのある人に、AIのような経験をしたか聞くこともありです。もちろん、信頼出来る人に聞くことが大切。昆虫学者は素晴らしい権威を持っていますが、直接質問するのは難しいですね、知り合いでもない限り。）

We could check the internet, but we have to be careful. In most cases, we should avoid blogs and look for official sites. Scientific or government sources tend to work well. Wikipedia does not because anyone can write there. Media (news) sites can work well if the company is established (successful and widely known) because media needs to be accountable – if media makes a mistake, their reputation is harmed and people can sue them! The media needs to be careful to present truthful news.
（インターネットをチェックすることも出来ます。でも気をつけること。ブログなどは避け、公式な信頼出来るサイトを探すこと。科学的、または政府の情報は信頼出来ることが多いです。Wikipediaはダメ。誰でも書き込み出来ますから。メディアのサイトは使えることが多いですが、そのメディア自体の知名度が高く歴史もあるものであること。メディアは信頼に足ることが条件ですので、もし間違いを書いたらその評判は落ちてしまい、時には訴えられてしまいます。だからメディアは真実のニュースを伝えるよう細心の注意を払います。信頼出来るメディアを選ぶスキルが必要です。）

６．Checking the Essay Style

Next, analyze the style of the ChatGPT essay by comparing it to your essay. Look for style issues such as:

Does the ChatGPT essay use a hook?　（Hookはありますか？）
Does it have a clear topic sentence?　（明確なトピックセンテンスはありますか？）
Does it have 3 reasons?　（３つの理由はありますか？）
Does it have specific examples?　（具体例はありますか？）
Does it flow well?　（エッセイ全体の流れはスムーズですか？）
Does it use dead words?　（ありきたりで意味が漠然としている単語を使っていませんか？）
Does it have a conclusion?　（結論はありますか？）
Etc.

What changes does the ChatGPT essay need to make it better? Use your ideas from #5 and make a list of improvements. For instance, if ChatGPT does not have a hook, write one. If it doesn’t have specific examples, add one (or use hypothetical examples).
